← Edge node

What to buy, and how many.

Tell us how many cameras a site has and which modules they run. You get the processor, memory and storage each edge node needs, and how many nodes the site needs, from the same benchmarks KENAEZ uses to check a node once it is running.

Quick reference

How many cameras can one machine take?

Cameras on their sub-stream, with a core kept free for the system. Plan for about a quarter fewer if you expect to add cameras later.

Posture modules are fall detection, PPE compliance, weapons flagging, vaping review and altercation detection. They add a posture pass for each person in view; these figures allow for three people per camera.

Machine Detection modules only Posture modules on every camera
4 cores, 8 GB Up to 4 cameras Up to 2 cameras
6 cores, 8 GB Up to 7 cameras Up to 4 cameras
8 cores, 8 GB Up to 10 cameras Up to 6 cameras
8 cores, 16 GB, on 1080p streams Up to 4 cameras Up to 3 cameras

Good to know

Before you buy.

No graphics card needed

Detection runs on the processor. Spend the money on cores and memory instead.

One node per site network

A node must reach its cameras on the local network. Cameras on separate networks or separate sites need a node of their own.

Wired, not wireless

Connect the node to the camera network with wired gigabit Ethernet. Every camera streams to it continuously.

Higher-resolution cameras

Point KENAEZ at each camera's sub-stream. A 1080p stream takes about twice the processor and four times the memory, and one node keeps up with at most four of them. 4 MP and 4K main streams cost more still.

Windows or Linux

Windows 10, 11 or Server, 64-bit Linux on x86, or Raspberry Pi OS (64-bit) on a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5.

The app checks your sizing

Once installed, every node reports its real load. Its Performance panel in KENAEZ shows whether the machine is comfortable, adequate or undersized for the cameras and modules it runs.

How these figures are worked out

Measured end to end on the real edge software: 25 fps camera streams decoded and five frames a second analysed, on a 4-core 2.8 GHz Xeon, with a core kept free for the system. Most current desktop and mini-PC processors are faster per core. Intel N-series and Raspberry Pi have not been benchmarked yet. Unsure what to buy? Ask us and we will check it for you.
